DISCOVERING ACQUI TERME AND THE SURROUNDINGS
If
the encounter with the province of Alessandria is a challenge for the
ones who are fascinated by the past and by the local culture and for the
ones who are fond of the good cuisine, then Acqui
Terme is the prize for the winners of these challenges, since this
town is particularly plenty of any attraction that our territory might
offer. Here the Romans founded a flourishing trade center and a
luxurious area with palaces and swimming pools. The aqueduct, whose
monumental ruins are still visible, is a testimony of a technology that
makes us astonished even today. This piece of territory is not just the
town of Acqui Terme, though, but also the spots
up and down the hills of the valleys: the Orba Valley (that joins
Alessandria to Acqui), the Bormida Valley (with important villages like
Spigno and Bistagno) and the Erro Valley that drives us from the plain
to the mountains and, after crossing
Sassello, to the seaside.

The
Orba Valley is a zone of rich and historical villages. Among them there
are Strevi, Rivalta Bormida (today important center of production of
fruits and vegetables), Montaldo Bormida, Carpeneto and Cassine.
Strevi deserves a particular attention from the traveller who heads from
Alessandria to Acqui. The village boasts an
origin that gets lost in the legend: it is the legend of ten brothers
that, after walking around for long, decided to settle down seven, after
a colossal drink, on the plain near the river (from these "septem ebbrii",
the name of Strevi) and three, sober, founded, on a hill close to Ovada,
Trisobbio, from "tres sobrii". Like all legends, also this one has got a
piece of truth within a fantastic context: the truth is the fame and the
value of the Strevi vineyards, its grapes and its
wines, from the Moscato to the
Brachetto, from the Barbera to the Dolcetto.
