DISCOVERING ACQUI TERME AND THE SURROUNDINGS (Pag. 2)
In
any case, Strevi is able to differentiate itself also in the historical
field, thanks to the passion for its autonomy. When, in 1799, the French
lieutenant arrived in the village, the inhabitants, together with others
from Rivalta Bormida and Visone, rebelled and pushed the enemies
backwards forcing them to withdraw to Acqui.
Encouraged by the success, the rebels tried to conquer Alessandria
itself, already fallen on
Napoleon’s hand, but, already in Acqui, they were defeated by 4,000
soldiers coming from Turin and were consequently punished: 34 houses of
the village were burnt and for three days, as a consequence, the
locality was abandoned to the pillage.

Cassine may be defined as one of the most evocative centers near Acqui,
since it hosts the monumental complex of the Abbey of Saint Francis, of
Romanesque and gotic inspiration. This village lies on the left bank of
the Bormida, partly on the plain and partly (the older one) upon the
hill. Despite the conflicts that have spotted its history, the upper
part of Cassine remains a jewel of our arts and in June a medieval
fancy-dress festivity has become a tradition so as to restore the
ancient glorious times of this place. Cassine is today one of the most
important places of the province for the production of
wines.
The
surroundings of Acqui, it should be emphasized, are a paradise for the
delikatessen: from the Piedmont “fritto
misto” to the boiled meat (the “bollito”) and to the “bagna
cauda” soup. And then also the “farinata”,
the
agnolotti, the cakes like the traditional “bonet”.
The wines of Acqui? We cannot forget
that we stay exactly in the middle of the Monferrato hills and here we
have especially the Dolcetto and the Brachetto.
