DISCOVERING ALESSANDRIA AND THE SURROUNDINGS
The
territory around Alessandria, amid wide
cultivated fields, marks the encounter, shortly before the main town of
our province, between two important rivers, the Tanaro, that flows down
from the West, and the Bormida, that moves on from the South, before
they join into the Italian biggest river, the Po.
The
Tanaro, after going through the southern part of the province of Asti,
through wild valleys and luxuriant flat fields, enters our territory by
wedging itself into the hills of the Lower and of the Upper Monferrato
and by lying itself amid active agricultural villages like Quattordio,
Felizzano, Oviglio and Quargnento.
The
Bormida, on the contrary, brings us towards the south of Alessandria, up
to the hills around Acqui and makes us discover populous and ancient
spots like Cantalupo, Castellazzo and Bosco Marengo. In
Bosco Marengo Pope Saint Pius the
Fifth was born in 1504 and here he began to build the church of the Holy
Cross that includes a Dominican convent, realized upon a plan sketched
by Ignazio Danti. In the church the visitor can still admire a monument
dedicated to Saint Pius the Fifth that is a work of a Michelangelo’s
student, and a painting of Giorgio Vasari.

Alessandria is certainly the most important town of this territory, and
of the entire province as well, with its history, its world-famous
companies (who does not know “Borsalino”?), with its new university.
Founded in the second half of the XII century around the village of
Rovereto (even if there are memories of a far older past, especially
near the spot of Villa del Foro), the city has passed through the
centuries from the legendary Lombard League to an alternance of peaceful
periods and warful periods with Genoa, from the dominance of the
Visconti dinasty to the one of the Savoia family that made it a trade
crossroads of primary importance for all the Northern Italy. The
government of Napoleon, and the
successive Italian one, just inherited this active and flourishing city
and passed on to us
