CHILD OF BREAD
Holyday time is today time of extra-pay, of holyday in skiing resors, of
dancing parties and of more or less precious gifts; once upon a time in
the farms near Fraschetta and upon the hills, holyday time was lived in
a different, but not less interesting manner. Among the traditions,
there was a pleasant that we would like to point out to you: the gift of
a child of bread.
The
bread in the countryside was prepared weekly in the farm and then
brought to the oven in the village to cook.
On
Saturdays the "biove" loaves and the "monferrine" loaves were
accompanied by the “cavagnèn”, a sort of bag made by bread paste and
sugar containing an apple; this cake was loved by children and was
sometimes substituted with the “tirà”, a sort of cake of different forms
according to the village custom.
There was always the bread paste, but it was enriched with sugar,
raisins and lard. The eggs were considered precious and in wartime even
forbidden in public oven to be used for cakes.
On
New Year’s Eve, some dummies were prepared, with the paste of the tirà
or simply with bread. These dummies had small raising as eyes and a
small cut as mouth, but had to be different for gender by dressing a
skirt or a pair of trousers. On New Year’s morning, these dummies were
given and exchanged with newighbours and friends by presenting a male
dummy to a lady and viceversa.
It’s a nice tradition because it associates the brad with the union of
the man with the woman: it’s a symbol of fertilità, such an important
feauture in the peasant civilization that here encounters the New Year’s
Day celebration.
