DISCOVERING TORTONA AND THE SURROUNDINGS

The history of Tortona is well explained by its being at the centre of one of the most important way of communication of the Northern Italy. In this city, that managed to be rich also in the dark periods of the Middle Age, the Romans and the Barbarians made war and then the Austrians, the Savoia, the Lombards, the French and the Spanish

Today, travelling along these roads means therefore discovering the encounter of piedmontese elements with influences from the regions around, a characteristic not only of Tortona, but also of the entire province. It means being able to mediate between the historical past of the various traces of our tradition and that infinite, continuous and always equal, past of those far-away and quiet valleys that from Tortona move towards the Appennines.

Not only the city is to be visited therefore, but also its outskirts, up and down those hills where Fausto Coppi, born in Castellania, used to train himself before becoming the champion of cycling whom everybody knows. The surroundings of the Curone Valley, from Viguzzolo to Caldirola and from Bruggi to the less steep slopes of the Grue and Ossona valleys. All this in a triumph of colours: the cherries, the peaches, the strawberries and then the various types of wines that here have, like everywhere in our province, their reign and their triumph.
