THE CURONE VALLEY
The
Curone Valley makes us abandon Tortona
and the plain and leads us, along a rather winding distance, to go back
on the freshness of the flowing down of the Curone torrent, between
sweet hills and colourful orchards, towards the highest tops of the
province, the Giarolo, the Ebro and the Chiappo. Tops that emerge from
forests of English oaks and chestnut trees, upon steep slopes and that
allow, from their alpine paths, to enjoy a sublime panorama, making our
view space around towards the four regions that try here nearly to touch
themselves: the Piedmont, the Lombardy, the Emilia and the Liguria. At
their feet the touristic locality of Caldirola (until a few years ago
the skylifts were active during all winter) and the localities of Bruggi,
Salogni, Forotondo and Selvapiana. Not to forget the low Curone Valley,
from Fabbrica to San Sebastiano and Volpedo
A
territory whose relative distance from the ordinary ways of
communication has concurred, in the course of the centuries, to enjoy
the best conditions to develop a rich and flourishing agriculture that
has its most important aspects in the fruits, in the breeding and in the
wine cultivation. Peaches, table
grapes, plums, cherries and
strawberries are well renown and
make the territory colourful and lovely. So do the pastures of altitude
and the production of the sweetest honey. The trufflles and the
wines rival with the ones of Asti.
The
rests from the feudal past are not missing, rich of traditions and
legends. Among these, the castles of Brignano (with the classic
structure of fort with battlements and bridge), of Pozzol Groppo (with
all the village around, according to the ancient urbanistic system) and
of San Sebastiano, but it is also possible to observe traces of ancient
constructions at Gremiasco, Fabbrica, on the ancient “Via del Sale” at
Montebore, at Montacuto,
Garbagna and, here and there, in all the territory.
