THE CURONE VALLEY (Pag. 2)
The
legend of the castle of Cantacapra is particulary curious: its wicked
inhabitants were sinked during a stormy night. The findings discovered
at Guardamonte are still more ancient, of an historical and
paleontological interest, while the mills of the valley give us a
particular insight in the daily and economic life of the past of these
zones.
The
Pievi (ancient parishes) deserve a particular attention, testimonies of
the birth of the civilization after the dark period of the barbaric
invasions, symbols of the year 1.000 and of the religious fervour of
this angle of the province: here their serious aspects were the mask of
a tenacious and militant faith. The most important one is the Pieve di
Santa Maria at Viguzzolo, then the one of San Pietro at Volpedo and
finally the one of Fabbrica, now converted into a parish. But the Pievi
cannot cancel the beauty of the small churches like those of Momperone,
Garbagna, the Tempio della Fraternitŕ at Cella di Varzi, a meticulous
collection and a votive offer of war reperts. A visitor fond of arts
cannot at last miss at Volpedo the study of the painter Giuseppe
Pellizza, author of the famous “Il Quarto Stato”. Inside such a study,
perfectly organized and open to the public, the same atmosphere of civil
and romantic passion can be breathed that is present in his masterpiece.
The
Museum of the peasant civilization of Lunassi should not also be
forgotten, in the magic atmosphere of the high Curone Valley.
